MALTA & GOZO PAGE 1/6

The three islands Malta, Gozo and Comino make up the Maltese archipelago. This Mediterranean island group lies at a latitude of 36 degrees North and a longitude of 14 East. The islands consist of Tertiary limestones from the Miocene and Oligocene Epoch. The yellow Globigerina limestone dominates the middle and eastern part of Malta, whereas Upper Coralline limestone appears at the surface in the western part. The older Lower Coralline limestone appears on the south coast and in northern coastal sections. On the photograph, you can see salt pans that are still beautifully intact which once were carved from the limestone, near Il-Blata I-Bajda in the middle North of Malta. Next page
