The process of coastal erosion is very well visible in the western part of Gozo. Here, at It-Tieqa Tad-Dwerja (Dwejra Azure Window), a combination of tectonic forces and coastal erosion have created an impressive limestone arch. Prevailing north-westerly winds and wave action have eroded the limestone into caves which became further widened over time. The limestone area around the arch is a graveyard of fossil sea urchins, mainly Scutella subrotunda, but unfortunately many fossils are broken and damaged. Qawra/Dwejra Heritage Park is an official EU Natura 2000 site.  Previous page
