Left Photo: Popular local crops on Lanzarote used to be onions, dried legume, grains, sweet potato and tomatoes. In spite of the perishing agricultural sector, the Cabildo of Lanzarote has taken the initiative to start a research station in organic culture: Finca Piloto de Agricultura Ecológica, near the capital Arrecife.
Right Photo: The main objective of the experimental garden is to develop a diversity of horticultural products for the island. Most organic companies on the Canary Islands are situated on Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Popular organic crops are tomatoes, bananas, other horticultural products, fruit and wine.

In this case no wheat is involved, but the traditional chícharo, a kind of chickpea that was originally only cultivated in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The Finca's aim is to reintroduce these traditional and local crops and to find out which variety of crops are specially fit for the climate of Lanzarote.
Right Photo: The Finca also produces an organic seed collection for local use. Apart from several horticultural crops, various grape varieties for wine production are doing well under organic conditions, especially moscatel. Other popular grape varieties on Lanzarote are malvasía and listán.
